Tsukumo Shokai was purchased by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870 during the Meiji restoration. The company was one of the few offered by the government to wealthy investors to be run as a sort of business model for the industrialization of Japan. Not rich but well connected Iwasaki used his influence to build Tsukumo into a massive shipping conglomerate changing the name to Mitsubishi (literally three diamonds in Japanese) in 1873. Its success earned the title of zaibatsu (money clique) and it joined its peers in controlling business in Japan. The company was diversified into such as banking, real estate and ship building. Mitsubishi entered the auto industry in 1917 with the creation of the Mitsubishi Model A, manufactuing a total of 22 units its first year1. Wars such as the Sino-Japanese War and WW1 benefited their business. In WW2 it would manufacture the famous “zero” warplane as well as ships but its success wouldn’t last as the end of the war saw its factories in ruins. Within Japan occupied by America after the war American anti-monopoly rules broke up the zaibatsu into 139 separate companies but with America’s call for support during the Chinese communist revolution and the Korean War such laws were loosened and the component companies reformed Mitsubishi becoming a keiretsu. The coming decades were witness to further diversification by Mitsubishi including automobile manufacturing but the 1990’s would try the company as the Japanese economy went into recession and private company began forming their own shipping networks. Today Mitsubishi has 382 subsidiaries and holds 199,228,062,306 yen in capital (as of 2007).
